Solar Export Control Made Simple

Solar Export Control Made Simple

Grid Stability. Feed-in Restrictions. Power Export Limitations…. Sounds like a complicated topic, but it doesn’t have to be. Simply put, Solar-Log’s Solar export control and feed-in management will control how much power your solar plant sends to the grid.
Why? …
Are you installing a grid-tied solar plant? Did the utility company say that you can’t? Was it because your solar plant will send too much excess power to the grid? No problem.

How Does Solar Plant Feed-in Management Work?

Zero Grid Export

Solar-Log Base Export Control Device

Solar-Log® Feed-in Management (FiM) is unique because it measures how much power you use. If you are using less power than what your solar plant can produce, it stops your plant from producing more. Now here is where it gets a bit more complicated…

Limited Grid Export

Your utility company likely told you that you couldn’t export all of the power produced by your solar plant, but you could export some of it. They probably indicated a pre-determined amount of electricity that your solar plant could export. This is typically defined as a kilowatt amount or as a percentage the solar plant’s capable peak production. This is again where Solar-Log® FiM comes in. Solar-Log® tells your plant to produce as much power as you are using PLUS the utility company’s pre-determined feed-in amount. That way, you use the power produced by your plant and you get paid for the power that you export to the grid. On top of that, the utility company is assured that your solar plant will not exceed the feed-in limitation.

Solar-Log® Measures Building Usage and Controls the Solar Plant Production Accordingly

Why set Solar Export Limitations?

If your utility company said that you can’t feed-in all of the solar power produced, it is most likely due to grid equipment limitations. The utility grid in most States was constructed to handle the amount of power produced by the utility company’s power generators. The solar power boom began only 10 years ago. Since then, power produced by private sources is fed into the same utility grid. Cables and transformers need to be able to handle the excess electricity from these additional power sources.

Utility providers may offer another solution which is upgrading the grid infrastructure, at the cost of the plant owner. These upgrades can be very expensive, cost-prohibited and not a viable option. Solar-Log® FiM provides a cost-effective solution that is a WIN-WIN for both the solar plant owner and the utility provider.
